The Electoral College keeps states in control of presidential elections

The Electoral College is worth defending

The American founders rejected a national popular vote and instead created the Electoral College. This state-by-state process to elect the president does several important things: it forces politicians to attract national support; keeps states in charge of elections (preventing presidents from controlling their own reelections); and contains election disputes within the states where they arise.
