Defending the Electoral College and the Constitution since 2009
For 16 years, Save Our States has stood up for the Electoral College and our constitutional system of states. Thanks to a small-but-dedicated team, and a vast number of allies, we have won many victories and educated millions of Americans. Now we are expanding to take on additional issues. The focus will remain mostly in the states, on policies of national importance, and where there is a need for our strong, clear, conservative voice.
I founded Save Our States in 2009, while on staff at The Freedom Foundation. They had hired me two years earlier to build a grassroots and civic education program. Still in my 20s, I wanted to explain to our members my own reasons for being an activist and a conservative.
What I believe is that America is exceptional—and that this claim demands a follow-up question: Why?
There are multiple reasonable answers, but one is federalism. Our unique system of states has helped local governance stay local, and national issues stay national. It allows diversity and experimentation among the states, meaning more people get the policies they want and we all benefit from trial and error (and success). Yet too often states disregard their power or use it poorly.
To revive federalism, we must remember: The best argument for federalism is a well-run state.
This is why we helped launch a coalition against ranked-choice voting, which makes a mess of elections, and have worked with allies on how states can help protect our nation against foreign threats. It is also why we are wading into health care issues, where states need to push back against failed federal policies. We are even engaging against ESG and DEI, and I’m sure there will be more to come.
One secret to our success at Save Our States is that we get down into the details without missing the bigger picture. We see the world as it is, but don’t lose sight of our conservative ideals. And we’ll work with anyone who wants to come along, one issue at a time. Really, the success of Save Our States belongs to a dedicated team of people—staff, allies, activists, supporters. I’m thankful, more than I can express, to each of them.
