Save Our States urges U.S. Senate to act on healthcare price transparency
Harry Roth • Apr 24, 2026

Last week, the executive director of Save Our States sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune asking him to enshrine healthcare price transparency in statute during reconciliation negotiations in Congress.

In the letter, which was covered by the Daily Wire, England described the reality facing average American consumers. “Patients without access to clear prices lack the power to act as consumers … often leaving them with devastating surprise medical bills after it’s too late.” He added, “Making healthcare prices transparent and fostering competition will allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money and face less financial uncertainty.”

The push for transparent pricing isn’t partisan or controversial—in fact, it’s supported by 98% of voters. That level of support is rare for any major issue, but giving patients prices is just common sense. Only hospital executives benefit from hiding prices, which allows them to charge more and even add charges long after a visit or procedure is complete. Leader Thune should use his authority during the reconciliation process to require healthcare price transparency in statute, with a quick timeline and strong enforcement, creating a future where Americans can shop for healthcare the same way they shop for everything else.

Ultimately, real healthcare price transparency allows consumers to make informed decisions about their care and creates competition, which in turn increases options and reduces costs. With majorities in both chambers of Congress and widespread bipartisan support among elected officials and voters, there is no to miss the opportunity for an easy win by prioritizing healthcare price transparency.
